Currently, Texas is in its 88th legislative session. Every year, the amount of anti-LGBT+ bills filed increases exponentially. Texas is currently facing 20+ of these bills, many of which seek to limit transgender minors access to healthcare and support. Texas residents should call their senators and representatives to oppose harmful bills. Use this link to find yours. Some of these bills may have passed the House and the Senate, so instead contact the Governor's office.Once you've determined who to contact, determine which bills you wish to oppose, and where they currently are in the legislative process.Then, contact your legislators using their contact info from the link above. What are the laws, and what do they mean?
Here's a brief explanation of what this year's bills cover, and how they could affect transgender Texans.-HB1686, SB14, HB1752, and SB249 would criminalize and ban healthcare for trans minors.-HB888 would define the practice of providing gender-affirming care to minors as medical malpractice.-HB1532, HB436, and HB672 would consider parents and guardians who seek gender-affirming medical care for their children as child abusers.-HB42 would modify the definition of child abuse to include providing gender-affirming care.-SB250, HB122, and HB41 would punish medical practitioners for providing gender-affirming care to minors.-HB2116 would repeal the informed consent model for adult trans people, making gender-affirming care harder to access than it already is.-SB393, HB1155, and HB1541 would heavily restrict discussions and education about gender identity and sexual orientation in K-12 schools, in addition to punishing educators.-HB23, SB15, and SB649 would prohibit transgender athletes in K-12 sports, as well as college sports, from playing with the gender that they identify as.-HB1266, HB643, HB708, and SB476 would restrict drag performances. It's vital to note that the definition of drag in these bills are incredibly loose, and these bills could harm gender non-conforming people in their day to day life.
